The College is dedicated to deliver high quality technical education and aims to produce graduates who have the professional and personal skills to enter employment with confidence, thus contributing effectively to the Sultanate’s ongoing economic development.
UTAS-A is committed to continuously harness the quality of teaching and learning through a holistic educational approach in a flexible and dynamic manner with the use of emerging technology and knowledge-wealth environment. We employ good teaching practices, implement staff development programs, and improve facilities.
Our students are exposed to diverse activities, involved in various clubs and organizations, and engaged in application-based tasks that greatly develop their personal skills, ideas, and capability needed in their chosen career. Likewise, we hire teaching and support staff that possess quality, competence, and professional attitudes. They are equally responsible to perform their job and dedicated for the academic growth and development of our students.
Teaching Method and Portfolio
Lecturers are encouraged to employ various teaching methods and teaching venues are equipped to allow lecturers flexibility in the delivery of material. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, practicum, seminars, industrial visits, guest lectures and case studies. Practical application of theory is offered through workshops, laboratories, field visits, in-class practical activities, OJT, and EPT.
Every course lecturer maintains a teaching portfolio, or course file, that contains the class schedule, goals, objectives and outcomes, delivery plan, attendance records, supplementary materials, and assessment records. The course outcomes coverage reports are submitted to the Head of Section.
UTAS-A makes the necessary effort to attain, sustain, and improve teaching quality. Lecturers, infrastructure, students, program delivery and assessment are the important factors for the delivery of quality teaching.
To maintain quality teaching, we have the following approach in place:
- Recruitment of competent lecturers with both academic and industrial experience following a standard which is consistent throughout the departments.
- Lecturers employ different types of teaching methods in order to develop cognitive, interpersonal and professional skills which will satisfy the demands of the labor market.
- Sharing best practices in teaching, learning and assessment.
- Emphasizing practical application of theory.
- Every lecturer is required to maintain a teaching portfolio (otherwise known as course file) for each course assigned.
- Lecturers allocate at least one hour per day to students and advisees for discussion.
- Student evaluation of teaching and HoS/HoD evaluation of teaching.
- The College has been taking steps to maintain a staff/student ratio of 1:20, uniformly in all the academic departments.
